Chapter History
You have to know where you’ve been to know where you are going. Kappa holds a special place in its heart for Fraternity history, but every chapter of our organization has unique beginnings of its own. Each plays a part in shaping us today. Read more about our chapters’ histories in Kappa's digital archives.
The Gamma Rho chapter was founded at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1888. In the fall of 1887, nine female students organized themselves through correspondence in hopes of creating a Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter on Allegheny's campus. Gamma Rho is a chapter that is filled with ritual, history, and tradition. For example, Gamma Rho was given a well-formed skeleton named Mrs. P.B. who was often stolen by Fraternity members! Mrs. P.B. has found a safe resting place in the home of a Gamma Rho alumna. If you take a look around the Kappa suite, you will see various documents, photographs, awards, and memorabilia which truly tell the tale of Gamma Rho. The Gamma Rho 125th Anniversary Celebration occurred in October of 2013. Over 100 Gamma Rho alumnae traveled to Allegheny College for a morning full of recounting memories, incessant laughter, and bonding over sisterhood.
